Anthropic Mythos: The new AI breakthrough shaking the global cybersecurity industry

The emergence of a new artificial intelligence model named Mythos is sending shockwaves through the technology and financial sectors. More than just an intellectual leap, Mythos is being identified as a primary driver behind the sharp decline in the stock prices of numerous cybersecurity firms, as its capabilities push boundaries that were once considered beyond human control.

Mythos: A quantum leap in capability from project "Capybara"

Anthropic, a leading pioneer in artificial intelligence, is currently testing a new lineup of models under the codename "Capybara." Within this series, Mythos stands as the most powerful iteration, engineered to far surpass the performance of Claude Opus 4.6-the company’s previous flagship model.

What sets Mythos apart is its exceptional proficiency in academic reasoning, programming, and, most notably, advanced cybersecurity skills. For now, Anthropic remains cautious, granting early access only to a small, rigorously vetted group of customers. This hesitation stems from Mythos's ability to analyze complex code structures and identify vulnerabilities with extreme precision.

Concerns over automated "Zero-day" vulnerability hunting

The primary concern among experts is Mythos's ability to autonomously discover zero-day vulnerabilities.

Zero-day vulnerabilities are software flaws unknown to the vendor and for which no patch exists. These are extremely dangerous "weapons" if they fall into the wrong hands.

In real-world testing, Mythos demonstrated its capacity to scan live source code and pinpoint latent security weaknesses that had previously eluded human detection. The fact that an AI can automate this process signals a new era for cyberattack tools.

The speed at which the AI identifies and exploits vulnerabilities could be so fast that human security professionals cannot keep up with the patching cycle. If the model's safeguards are breached or replicated by well-resourced criminal organizations, the risk of large-scale cyberattacks is very real. In fact, Anthropic has already recorded attempts by threat actors to leverage previous AI versions to automate intrusion chains.

Market reaction: Pressure on traditional security methods

News of Mythos's capabilities has sent the financial markets into a tailspin. The Global X Cybersecurity ETF (which tracks cybersecurity firms) plummeted 4.5% last weekend, marking its lowest point since late 2023. Year-to-date in 2026, the decline has exceeded 21%.

Investors are concerned because AI tools like Mythos are fundamentally changing the rules of the game:

  • From static to dynamic: Historically, security relied on predefined rules (pattern scanning). Now, AI such as Mythos or "Claude Code Security" (launched in February 2026) can reason flexibly like an expert to identify malicious data flows.

  • The challenge of obsolescence: Legacy security firms are facing immense pressure to overhaul their entire vulnerability detection systems. If they fail to upgrade their tools to counter attacks at "machine speed," they risk being phased out of the market.

The development of Anthropic Mythos indicates that AI is no longer merely a support tool but has evolved into a true "vulnerability hunter." While it offers the opportunity to fortify defenses, the risk of it being weaponized for offensive purposes is equally significant. The global security industry clearly requires a completely new approach to navigate this volatile technological wave.
