The emergence of AI Agent portals like OpenClaw has opened a new chapter for technology, turning what once seemed like science fiction into reality. However, behind this breakthrough and convenience lie specific security risks that cannot be overlooked.
In reality, OpenClaw operates on a significant trade-off. To deliver optimal efficiency, it requires deep access to the user's computer, applications, browsers, and personal files. This level of deep intervention inadvertently creates dangerous loopholes for cyberattacks.
Vulnerabilities from Plaintext data
One of the biggest issues with OpenClaw lies in its data storage method. The configuration files and memory of this tool are not intricately encrypted; instead, they often exist as plaintext - meaning anyone (or any software) capable of opening the file can easily read its contents.
An attacker does not need to be a master cracker. Modern infostealers have the capability to automatically scan common directories on a disk. If information such as API keys, tokens, or chat histories are stored in plaintext in predictable locations, they can be exfiltrated in mere seconds.
The trap of malicious "Skills"
In the OpenClaw ecosystem, extended features are typically called "skills." Essentially, a skill is often just a Markdown file. However, this file serves as an installer for the AI Agent.

A prime example is the "Twitter skill" that was once popular on the ClawHub system. Users could easily download it because it appeared useful, but it was actually a medium for distributing malware. Security experts discovered that this file contained malware specifically designed to steal data on macOS. This type of malware can sweep all valuable information from your computer, ranging from browser passwords and autofill data to other critical security keys.
The risk extends beyond a single tool
This security issue is not limited to OpenClaw. Currently, many other AI Agent systems are adopting a similar "Agent Skills" structure - using directories containing instructions and free execution code.
Even documentation from tech giants like OpenAI describes an equivalent structure. This means that malicious "skills" are becoming a malware distribution mechanism that could spread across the entire AI Agent ecosystem if this standard remains common.

When personal information is "weaponized" by context
This vulnerability is far more serious than just a leaked password or a standard token. The difference lies in the context.
Imagine an attacker who not only has access to your service accounts but also holds the AI Agent's entire long-term memory. They will know who you are, what projects you are working on, your writing style, and your frequent contacts.
The combination of account access and deep personal insight provides the perfect "ingredients" for highly sophisticated phishing, extortion, or identity theft that feels incredibly authentic.
Solutions and a safe roadmap for the future
Given these existing risks, the most important advice for enterprises is: Strictly avoid testing OpenClaw on work devices or systems with access to critical infrastructure. The project itself acknowledges that there is currently no setup that is absolutely secure.
However, rather than turning away from the technology, we need to build a new "trust layer" for AI Agents based on the following standards:
Origin authentication: Skills must be clearly verified regarding their creator and security integrity.
Access control: Instead of granting all-encompassing permissions, AI Agents should only have the least privilege necessary, with time limits and the ability to be revoked at any time.
Real-time monitoring: Every sensitive action performed by the AI should be mediated and logged for oversight.
In summary, while AI Agents like OpenClaw offer immense potential, their security frameworks are still in their infancy. Establishing a distinct identity and a rigorous governance mechanism for each AI Agent is the only way forward toward a technological future that is both intelligent and secure.
