Beware of fake VssID app designed to steal user assets

Vietnam Social Security (VSS) has just issued an urgent warning regarding a new tech-driven scam. Authorities have detected malicious actors distributing a fraudulent app that impersonates the official "VssID - Digital Social Security" platform to trap mobile users.

Sophisticated tactics and the dangers of the fake app

Cybercriminals have been distributing a counterfeit application file named "VSSID.apk". According to assessments by VSS, this is a highly dangerous new scam tactic because the application is embedded with malware. Once a user installs the file, this malware can compromise and seize full control of the victim's smartphone.

Cybersecurity experts analyze that this type of malware is capable of unauthorized scanning and accessing data stored on the device, such as contacts, photos, and messages. More alarmingly, the fake application silently establishes a connection to a command-and-control server located overseas. This opens the door for scammers to remotely control the phone, harvest personal identifiable information, and illicitly access bank accounts to steal user assets.

How to stay safe and avoid the scam trap

To avoid falling victim to these scammers, users should adhere to the following safety practices:

  • Only download apps from trusted sources: Users should only install the VssID application through official marketplaces, including the App Store (for iOS) or Google Play Store (for Android).

  • Do not install unknown files: Strictly refrain from clicking on suspicious links and never install files with an ".apk" extension from unverified origins.

  • Verify suspicious information: If you receive any unusual calls or messages regarding social security services, contact your local VSS agency immediately or call the official hotline at 19009068 to verify the information.

  • Protect personal data: Always remain vigilant in securing private information, bank accounts, and especially OTP codes. Never share these sensitive credentials with anyone via phone, text messages, or social media platforms.

A look back at the role of the official VssID platform

The "Digital Social Security" (VssID) application is the official mobile information service platform provided exclusively by Vietnam Social Security.

Since June 1, 2021, citizens nationwide have been able to use the digital health insurance card integrated directly within the VssID app to replace physical paper cards during medical examinations and treatments. This practical technology solution serves as a secure, convenient, and rapid channel for individuals to access information and utilize online public services.

The rise of spoofed software embedded with malware requires technology users to be more vigilant than ever. Always thoroughly verify the source before installing any application onto your smartphone, and proactively safeguard your personal information to ensure your own cybersecurity.
