Global outage hits Facebook, Instagram: a technical infrastructure perspective

On the night of June 12, millions of users worldwide suddenly lost access to familiar applications within the Meta ecosystem. This widespread disruption not only caused inconvenience to individual users but also led to a drop of nearly $1 billion in billionaire Mark Zuckerberg's net worth.

What happened to Meta platforms on the night of June 12?

Users simultaneously experienced issues accessing Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads. Many accounts were abruptly logged out and could not log back in due to system errors indicating expired sessions, incorrect passwords, or a lack of server connection. At the same time, news feeds failed to load new content and messaging features were disrupted. To verify the situation, a large number of users had to switch to alternative platforms like X or Telegram.

How severe was the scale of this disruption?

According to online tracking platforms, this was considered one of Meta's most severe disruptions since the beginning of 2026. In Vietnam, the system began recording anomalies around 20:40 on June 12, with the volume of error reports skyrocketing from about 1,500 to over 40,000 cases within a short period.

In the US, Downdetector's chart also peaked with approximately 69,000 reports for Facebook and over 1,100 reports for Instagram. However, these data points only reflect the level of irregularity based on user feedback and do not imply that the entire community was affected.

Why were users simultaneously logged out of their accounts?

Meta has not yet issued an official announcement regarding the specific cause, leading to various speculations revolving around server errors, authentication glitches, or network infrastructure issues. However, experts emphasized that there is no evidence suggesting a cyberattack.

Disruptions of this nature typically stem from internal technical errors, data center operational malfunctions, or user authentication system glitches. This mass logout phenomenon is highly similar to the major incident in March 2024, when an internal technical error within Meta's system impacted hundreds of thousands of accounts without any external attack factors.

What similar incidents has Meta experienced in the past?

The operational history of this tech giant has witnessed several large-scale outages. Most notable was in October 2021, when Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp were completely paralyzed for over 7 hours globally, affecting billions of users.

In March 2024, another incident lasting more than 2 hours also caused Facebook and Instagram to receive massive error reports on Downdetector, peaking at over 550,000 and around 92,000 reports, respectively. Consequently, experts believe the June 12 incident is highly likely another consequence of internal technical issues.

How does this disruption impact business operations?

The impact of the outage extended far beyond personal entertainment disruptions. Numerous businesses and online stores relying on channels within the Meta ecosystem for sales, advertising, and customer care were paralyzed. Throughout the incident, they were unable to interact with clients, marketing campaigns were halted, and corporate messaging systems faced severe interruptions, mirroring the damages to business and advertising tools that Meta noted during previous platform outages.

The disruption of major platforms demonstrates that businesses should not completely rely on a single proprietary channel. To minimize operational risks and safeguard business processes against infrastructure failures, building an independent and resilient IT framework is essential.
