Instagram, Facebook, Messenger hit by widespread outage again, impacting users and businesses

Social media platforms owned by Meta, including Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, have just experienced a global service disruption. The incident left thousands of users unable to send messages, refresh news feeds, or access their accounts for hours.

Thousands of error reports in a short period

According to data from Downdetector - a platform that tracks Internet service disruptions based on user reports - the outage broke out around the evening of July 22 (equivalent to approximately 10:00 GMT). Error reports spiked across multiple countries, including Vietnam.

The actual number of reports could be much higher than recorded figures. Specifically:

  • Instagram: Hardest hit with over 4,000 error reports. Among them, 62% of reports were related to the mobile application, 15% to server connection issues, and 13% to feed loading failures.

  • Facebook: Error reports fluctuated between 1,000 and around 3,600 at peak times. Issues were split among application bugs (37%), web version access glitches (32%), and login failures (23%).

  • Messenger: Recorded over 1,200 reports regarding the inability to send or receive messages.

In contrast to the above services, Meta's two other platforms, WhatsApp and Threads, recorded no outage reports during this disruption.

Direct impact on communication and business operations

Occurring during evening hours, the outage caused sudden disruptions to both personal activities and work. Ms. Bich Diep, an office worker in Ho Chi Minh City, shared that while discussing important work matters via Messenger, her messages got stuck, interrupting her conversation for over 30 minutes.

Not only individual users, but businesses also faced major trouble. Mr. Huu Hoang, administrator of a fanpage with over 100,000 members, stated that administrative features virtually came to a standstill, forcing him to switch to other channels such as Zalo or direct phone calls.

Mr. Mai Thanh Phu, a social media service provider in Ho Chi Minh City, noted that system instability in the evening - the peak time for online shops to consult customers and close orders - directly affected customer service processes and business revenue. To check on the situation, many users turned to other platforms such as X (Twitter) or Reddit to report and discuss the issue.

Consecutive disruptions and silence from Meta

This is not the first time Meta's systems have encountered problems recently. This incident occurred just 3 days after the previous disruption on July 19 (Sunday). Earlier, in June, Meta's systems also experienced a global disruption lasting about an hour before being restored.

The high frequency of repeated incidents is raising concerns regarding the stability and operational capacity of Meta's technical infrastructure and monitoring systems. However, as of now, Meta representatives have yet to provide any official comment or statement regarding the cause or scope of impact of this disruption.
